"Warm Winter Reads" challenge heating up
Feb.
10, 2010—The
Voorheesville Middle School Library's "Warm Winter Reads" challenge is
heating up this month. Students have been challenged to read 400 books in four weeks
(Feb. 1-26). As of today (second week of the challenge), there are
100 registered students who have read 156 books.
"We're hoping our readers will hit the 200 mark on the 'read-o-meter'
before we going into next week's break," said middle/high school
librarian Christina Menetti. "Every book students read during the
break counts!"
Students can watch as they progress towards the 400 "book mark" by
visiting the giant "Read-o-meter" in the library (photo at
right), which is updated
weekly with the total number of books read. For each book they complete,
students can choose a small gift item. Their name is also submitted in a drawing held each
Friday throughout the challenge to receive a $10 gift certificate for
the book fair.
The Scholastic Book Fair will be held
Feb. 24-26 from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the library. It will also run
during Teen Night on February 26.
Visit the Book Fair Web page.
To celebrate students’ achievements, the library is planning to hold a
reception on March 2, which coincides with the National Education
Association’s "Read Across America" event. The date is also the birthday
of children's book author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
