64 Voorheesville music students participate in NYSSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival

(April 20, 2010) Sixty-four Voorheesville music students in grades 6-12 participated in the New York State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Music Festival April 16-17 at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. Students worked with their music teachers to prepare an instrumental and/or vocal solo to perform for evaluation by a NYSSMA certified adjudicator. As part of the evaluation, students performed scales (from memory), a prepared solo and sight-read an excerpt for the judges.

“Students spend a great deal of time practicing for this event, and it is truly amazing to see how much they improve in a short period of time” says music teacher and department coordinator Chris Jantson. “In addition to helping students improve on their instrument, participating in NYSSMA also helps students build self-confidence and set goals. Performing at NYSSMA can also open other performance opportunities for students including participation in Colonial Council Music Festivals and the Area-All State Music Festival”.
