Feedback sought on food allergy policy/regulations
Feb. 12, 2009 – To help ensure all students districtwide are protected
and remain safe from food allergies, a new policy addressing this
growing health concern is currently being reviewed by the Voorheesville
Board of Education, and is expected to be adopted during their regularly
scheduled board meeting on March 9.
Students, parents, staff and community members are encouraged to review
the policy and regulations, and submit their questions, concerns and
feedback.
Food allergies can cause a myriad of symptoms, such as hives, difficulty
breathing, heart failure or even a life-threatening reaction known as
anaphylaxis.
The goal of the policy is to reduce the likelihood, and respond
appropriately to, incidents of severe allergic reactions among students
districtwide, as well as to raise awareness and educate the entire
school community about the severity of food allergies in order to create
a safer school environment.
The procedures and polices were developed by a committee formed earlier
this school year, which included more than 25 members, such as parents,
school representatives and board members. It also included school
physicians, representatives from the Capital Region BOCES
Health/Safety/Risk Management Service and legal counsel.
