The month of October means
that Mrs. Podgorski
kicks off her poetry unit with her traditional
introduction of Theodore Roethke's very familiar poem.
Mrs. Pod has been teaching "The Bat" for more years
than the middle school staff can remember, but chances are the parents
of her 8th graders can recite the poem along with the students.
As the unit progresses, the words to the poem disappear from the board,
as students commit the poem to memory. The classroom becomes overtaken
by numerous bats and bat artwork, all collected by Mrs. Pod and created
by her students.
By Halloween, ask any 8th grader to recite the poem for you!
