Colucciello named VCSD interim superintendent of schools
A former interim principal of Voorheesville
Elementary School has been appointed as the school district's
interim superintendent for the 2008-09 school year.
Raymond Colucciello will serve as superintendent
while the Board of Education conducts a search for a permanent
replacement for Linda Langevin, who plans to retire at the end of
August. Langevin was appointed superintendent prior to the 2005-06
school year.
Colucciello, 70, began his career as an
elementary school teacher for the Scotia-Glenville School District and
worked his way up to superintendent of the Schenectady City School
District, a post he held from 1993-2001. Since retiring, he has worked
as an interim superintendent for three Capital Region school districts:
Schoharie, Troy and, most recently, the Ballston Spa Central School
District, where he served from 2005-08. He has also served as an interim
principal for four school districts: Albany, Schalmont, Sharon Springs
and Voorheesville.
Colucciello earned a bachelor's degree in elementary
education from SUNY Oneonta, a master's degree in elementary education
from Columbia University and a doctorate in educational
administration from SUNY Albany.
The search for a permanent superintendent will begin
in the fall, and the board has asked
Capital Region BOCES to take the lead, Langevin said.
According to the BOCES
Web site, the search takes about six months and district residents play
a significant role in helping to select the best candidate. The process
generally proceeds like this:
-
Preliminary meetings between board of education
and BOCES administrators
-
School/community meeting to develop a list of
characteristics of the superintendent
-
Advertising in local, regional and national
publications
-
Preparing and mailing materials such as
brochures, applications, letters
-
Screening applications, verifying credentials
and selecting 12 to 15 semifinalists
-
Coordinating and overseeing interviews of six to
eight semifinalists by the board of education
-
Coordinating and overseeing interviews of three
to five finalists by the board of education and school/community
teams
-
Arranging a visit to the school district of the
top candidate
