Death of sheriff's deputy candidate at Clayton A. Bouton High School
June 3, 2008
Dear parents and guardians,
It is with sadness that I write to inform you of a tragic event that
occurred today at Clayton A. Bouton High School.
As you may know, the Albany County Sheriff’s
Department has a facility next to the high school and occasionally uses
the school’s track to conduct physical fitness tests. This morning,
during a physical fitness test, a candidate who hoped to become a
sheriff’s deputy collapsed and died on the track, according to the
sheriff’s department.
Sheriff’s deputies on the scene attempted to revive
the candidate by performing CPR, and paramedics transported him to St.
Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Unfortunately, efforts to revive him were
unsuccessful, and the incident is currently under investigation.
The fitness test was being supervised by a certified
fitness instructor and included push ups, sit ups and a 1.5 mile run,
according to the sheriff’s department.
There were no students on the track at the time of
the incident, according to high school Principal Mark Diefendorf. As a
precaution, however, students were not allowed outside until paramedics
left the school.
The high school track and swimming pool are used
periodically for training purposes by the sheriff’s department, New York
State Police and other law enforcement agencies.
If you have questions regarding the candidate,
please contact the Albany County Sheriff’s Dept. at 518-487-5440.
