Student observations about the exchange program with students from Valladolid, Spain

Twenty-two Spanish exchange students recently spent two weeks visiting the Voorheesville Central School District.

The students flew into Newark International Airport on Monday, March 17. Later that day, they arrived in Voorheesville, where they were welcomed by the International Club.

During their trip, the exchange students attended classes at Clayton A. Bouton High School and visited Albany, Saratoga Springs, Boston and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass. Before flying back to Spain, they spent four days in New York City.

Some student observations about the exchange with the students from Valladolid, Spain:

1. An exchange fosters a world that is more just.

“We played basketball. It was like the Olympics.” Mike Zemanek

“Sports are the common denominator and a means of communication between people of the world.” Suzanne Thorman

“There's a better level of understanding between our two cultures.” Hillary Edmunds

2. “The exchange has been an opportunity to learn to respect our differences. They have different traditions. For example, one student told us that his family has some rooms dedicated to religious articles.” Clara Fried

“In the U.S. many of us have more than one car, and they say in Spain that they've got one per family.” Taryn Smith

“Maybe their life is more compact than ours, meaning they don't have to travel far to go to work, school, shopping, to see friends.” Hilary Edmunds

3. In the exchange you can live with a family and learn about their way of life. Also you can make new friends.

“When they were here we met new friends and now we want to go to Spain because we feel that we're developing solid friendships.” Taryn Smith

“When you live with a person for a couple of weeks and you both have a lot in common, you get to be good friends.” Jason Freeman

Jason Freeman
