Students recognized for accomplishments in the 2007 National Merit
Scholarship Program
Six Clayton A. Bouton High School seniors were
recently named recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Andrew N. Dubay and Steven Wang were named
semifinalists, while Gregory R. Carson, Richard J. Curreri, Joseph J.
Klembczyk and Sarah E. LaFave were named commended students. (Full
story, here.)
Dubay and Wang now have the opportunity to continue
in the competition with a chance to win one of the approximately 8,200
Merit Scholarship awards, worth a total of $33 million. The awards will
be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award,
semifinalists must advance to the finalist level of competition by
fulfilling several requirements. According to the program, roughly 90
percent of semifinalists typically attain finalist standing and about
half of those are selected as Merit Scholarship winners.
Carson, Curreri, Klembczyk and LaFave were four of
34,000 students in the nation who were recognized for their academic
promise. These students placed among the top five percent of all
students who took the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test.
About 1.4 million students took the exam, which
allowed them to take part in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship
Competition.
The National Merit Scholarship Competition, a
not-for-profit organization, was established in 1955 in order to conduct
the annual National Merit Program. Both competition funds and money from
approximately 500 business organizations and higher education
institutions underwrite the scholarships that are awarded through the
program.
