Visitor brings 18th century war, lifestyle to
classroom
Seventh-grade students in Mr. Tom Kurkjian’s history
class had a visitor from another era last week who showed them his
moccasins and musket, and told stories from long ago.
Local
performer Chris Shaw visited the school on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to teach
students what life was like for soldiers in the French and Indian War,
which is the time period they are studying in class.
Shaw’s ancestors fought in the French and Indian War
with the infamous Robert Rogers, whose “Rangers,” later became the
modern day Green Berets.
Shaw showed the students the type of tools used in
battle, flint and twine for fire-starting and some of the clothes that
were worn during the time period. In his "possibles bag," Shaw carried
certain tools for survival, and he explained that soldiers used muskrat
skins to protect and waterproof their bags.
Shaw
has come to talk to students in Kurkjian’s classes for the past six
years.
"It’s a show and tell lesson, which gives the kids
some examples of the time period we’re studying," Kurkjian said.
