Professional Cartoonist John Caldwell visits seventh-grade art classes
In
March Voorheesville’s seventh-grade art classes got a special visit from
nationally known, professional freelance cartoonist John Caldwell.
Caldwell’s work is frequently printed in Mad Magazine, Mad Kids, The
Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review and many
other national magazines. John also creates greeting cards for Recycled
Paper Greetings and Nobleworks. His work is currently on display at the
PAC Lobby Gallery at the Middle/High School.
During his visit, Mr. Caldwell talked with students
about the different areas of his
profession as well as how he creates and markets his work. For example,
Caldwell brought with him some original artwork for a Mad Magazine
spread and explained to the students how the cartoons are selected and
edited by the magazine’s art director. He showed students how his
original ideas go through many transitions, and how they are changed to
fit into the space provided by the magazine.
After
sharing his work with the students and answering many insightful
questions from students, he asked the kids to participate in a
cartooning activity. The object of the activity was to create a funny
cartoon based on a series of three criteria: an occupation, a place and
an action. The students collectively came up with the three parts and
then they worked individually to create their cartoons.
Be sure to visit the PAC Lobby Gallery and enjoy
John Caldwell’s original cartoons. The show will be on display through
April. |
