Students take part in Model United Nations event
From
Jan. 25-28, 39 Clayton A. Bouton High School students attended a Model
United Nations convention at Yale University.
At the event, which was attended by more than 1,200 student delegates
from more than 60 schools, students were also able to tour the Yale
University campus and get a preview of what college life might be like
by attending a few classes.
"It’s very enjoyable to watch the students learn the process and to do
so well," said Susanne Hudacs, the Model UN advisor who attended the
conference.
During the conference students were assigned to different committees and
councils. For example, Voorheesville students served on the Human Rights
Council, the Iraqi Constitutional Convention and the European Union,
among others.
The
four-day convention included opening and closing ceremonies, five
committee sessions, a panel discussion and a banquet. Everyone at the
event followed the Rules of Parliamentary Procedure and wore western
business attire.
Hudacs and the other chaperones encourage the Model UN participants to
write daily delegate diaries, where they describe each session they
participate in.
Several Voorheesville students won awards, including: Mike Garris, for a
Speaker’s Commendation in the European Union; Tom Cardinal for Honorable
Mention in the 2016 Olympic Committee; Maria Qualtere for Honorable
Mention in the Human Rights Committee; and Laura Amato for Outstanding
Delegate in the Iraqi Constitutional Committee.
