How do I…?Picture of a seventh-grade student in Mrs. Burgoon's English 7 class demonstrating how to make a smoothie.

How do you… start a lawnmower? Tack a horse? Prepare a perfect bagel? The answers were easy to find for students in Miss Burgoon’s English 7 class.

Every year, the week before the winter break, students in Miss Burgoon’s class deliver "How to" speeches for their classmates, describing any process they’d like. The speeches are the culmination of a unit on speeches.

"Public speaking skills are very important," said Burgoon. Students learn the process of creating a speech during the unit. To prepare their speeches, students choose a topic they would like to explain, write the speech, transfer it to an outline and finally use note cards for reference during the speech.

In addition to learning how to tack a horse and butter a bagel, students learned how to start a dirt bike, how to ride a skateboard, swing a golf club and even make a smoothie.
