Several sixth graders became knights!
As
part of the medieval unit in Sheila Lobel’s Social Studies 6 class, all
students had the chance to complete seven chivalrous tasks and then be
knighted.
The exercise teaches students about chivalry and
knighthood by having them complete seven chivalrous tasks at home, and
having each task approved by the "Lord of the Manor," a parent.
Students complete one task in each category: brave and honorable,
courteous, honest, protecting women and girls, redressing a wrong,
showing mercy to the weak and helping those in trouble.
"They’re very creative about it," Lobel said, explaining that tasks
sometimes include things like: opening the door for someone, helping
with groceries or picking up after the dog.
After the tasks and done and authorized, Lobel holds a knighting
ceremony where the students are sworn in.
