Elementary students learn about Healthy Habits
New 24/7 program introduced
On April 3, the Voorheesville Elementary School held
another Spirit Assembly, this time focusing on healthy habits.
During the assembly, school staff members who are experts in being
healthy, such as Coach McCormick, and school nurse Mrs. Brackett, talked
with students about healthy lifestyles and exercise, and students shared
their work on the topic as well.
Coach McCormick introduced the fifth-grade students that earned physical
education awards, and those students led the school in the Pledge of
Allegiance, and the song, "America."
Mrs. Brackett explained a new program we are encouraging students to
participate in, called 24/7. The idea of the program is to make at least
one healthy choice and do one healthy activity every day.
After the spring break, each student will receive a calendar with
stickers to help keep track of their progress and healthy choices. Each
healthy choice will earn the child a sticker, and after 20 stickers have
been charted, Mrs. Brackett will post a sneaker near the “Kindness Key”
bulletin board to signify that student’s achievement.
In addition, Mrs. Loomes, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Fitzgerald and the
kindergarten classes invited the whole school to join them in the "Tooty
Ta" song, which was fun for everyone.
Mrs. Spina shared some artwork related to Voorheesville sports and
exercise, and students in Mrs. Hamlin's class read some persuasive
essays about healthy eating and not smoking.
Finally, Mrs. Fiero and the fifth-grade Student Council members talked
about a district wide food drive that will begin April 23.
To end the assembly, students sang a song called "Live Well” at the end
of the assembly.
Once again, student participation was terrific, with many of them
wearing sports jerseys, or athletic wear or purple and gold for school
spirit.
