Social Studies 7, US History (Part 1), includes New York State, taught
by Thomas Kurkjian
Course meets daily, unless the team has put a
special plan into effect whereby the class might not meet on a given
day, or meet longer, or more than once!
Major/General Objective:
To continue, enrich, further a student's knowledge,
appreciation, ability to work with the content of the course.
Textbooks:
The History of US by Joy Hakim (Vol. 1-6 of 10);
plus many other works.
Expectations:
Do your best work, in a timely manner, and follow
the Golden Rule, don't be afraid to ask questions, do work above and
beyond, showcase your talents.
Evaluation Methods:
Grading: prefer letter grade ranges, must eventually
put into number for report card.
Homework:
If not written for a given day, then review; long
range assignment time spent, enrichment.
Testing (Quizzes):
Almost always announced ahead of time; tests reflect
the overall abilities found in any class-basic part, grade level and
more challenging questions included.
Participation:
Helpful, can make a difference if constructive,
probing
Projects:
Important, every quarter has individual and group
projects, i.e. for October Halloween Historical Dress-Up.

Variety important, variety with rigor, fairness, and
with challenges the ideal
Binder:
Set up early on, keep materials by date

Given for work above and beyond

Make up ASAP
Extra Help:
Use home base, Success Center, after school
Course Outline:
Chronological history of our nation (and state) to
the end of the Civil War (includes Pre-Columbian history and current
events).
Other:
Enrichment work expected of those with talent in
this area and for those whose enthusiasm and work ethic make him/her a
welcome addition to the group.
